The mission of the Center for Inquiry | Michigan is to foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values.

Presented by Darrel Ray, Ed.D., Author, The God Virus

Description

Darrel Ray will present a lecture based on his book The God Virus: How Religion Infects our Lives and Culture

For thousands of years, religion has woven its way through societies and people as if it were part and parcel to that society or person. In large measure it was left unexplained and unchallenged, it simply existed. Those who attempted to challenge and expose religion were often persecuted, excommunicated, shunned, or even executed. It could be fatal to explain that which the church, priest or imam said was unexplainable.

Learn how his ideas explain: the fundamentalism of your Uncle Ned, the sexual behavior of a fallen mega church minister, the child rearing practices of a Pentecostal neighbor, why 19 men flew planes into the World Trade Center, why religion protects pedophile priests and how it might affect a person’s IQ.

About the Speaker

Darrel Ray, Ed.D. is an organizational psychologist and consultant. He practiced for 10 years as a clinical psychologist before opening an international consulting practice in 1986. He has been a student of religion all his adult life: Raised in a fundamentalist home by parents who eventually became missionaries, he has seen religion from the inside out. Darrel received a Bachelor’s in Sociology/anthropology at Friends University in 1972, then decided to go into the ministry. He received an MA in Church and Community from Scarritt College for Christian Workers in 1974. After finishing his MA, he changed course and went on to receive a Ed.D. in psychology at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University 1978.

Darrel is the author of The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture. He is also the author of Teaming Up (1995) and The Performance Culture (2001). In 2009 Darrel founded Recovering from Religion (www.recoveringreligionists.com) – a group whose purpose is to help people out of religion. There are now more than 20 groups throughout the country.

Presented by Gregory Forbes, PhD, Director, Institute for Evolution Education

Description

While studies demonstrate that many Americans have little or no detailed knowledge of evolutionary theory, almost half of all Americans do not accept evolutionary theory as valid science. However, this lack of knowledge of evolution, and science in general, does not stop anti-evolutionists from making extraordinary claims against evolution theory. This presentation will explore the most common anti-evolutionist claims and the scientific, philosophical, theological and logical responses to those claims.
