A Brief Overview of Runes

These pages and runes in general are a not psychic readings. They do not give absolute answers. They can be fun. They can be thought provoking. Runes should be considered a tool for personal growth and personal understanding. For only through self awareness can one truly interact with the world around us. They are similar in usage to the Book of Changes (also known as the I Ching), in that they are both ways of opening one's mind to new modes of thought.

The runes are meant to be a reflection of the person using them, as well as the world around oneself. The belief system of the early users of the runes was that everything in the world was alive, and that it must be treated with respect. The runes were a way of "speaking" with this world. In this respect the relationship is still the same, except that now they are typically used to put the individual in touch with the emotional and psychological aspects of the world around them.

Rune Journal

A Rune journal is a good way to become familiar with the runes, as well as to gain insight to your inner self. Record your question, the stone(s) cast, and summary of your interpretation. Note the time, date and major concerns in your life.
You may notice that certain stones repeat quite often at times. If taken literally, this can indicate an ongoing issue. You may be blocked in a particular area of your life, work, family, etc. You may need to work on a particular personal aspect, personal reflection, communication, or the like. The journal can help you identify these areas of concern. If you don't take it literally, take advantage of the opportunity to progress in this area anyway, the practice probably won't hurt in the long run.

Odin's Rune Description

Drawing a single rune can be helpful for many simple insights, particularly during stressful times. It can help you to see the humor in a difficult matter. You can also use this single rune drawing to commemorate special events in your life. You may even want to keep track of these castings in a Rune Journal. Another simple use is to gain a simple Yes or No answer. To do so draw a rune upright is Yes, inverted is No, for those that can't be inverted draw again.
Another good use is to draw a stone in the morning and use it as a reference throughout the day. On particularly difficult days, draw another stone in the evening to see how you handled your problems that day.

Three Rune Spread Description

The three rune spread is also known as the Norns. The Norns are the three Norse Fates. The three Norns can be found by their spring that flows from beneath one root of the ash tree Yggdrasill. (the world tree) Urdur rules over the past, Verdandi the present, and Skuld the future. This rune spread consists of three runes, each one placed to the left of the stone drawn previously. Who wrapped her arms around me.
The following day the Frost Giants came,
Walked into Har's hall To ask for Har's advice:
Had Bolverk they asked, come back to his friends,
Or had he been slain by Suttung?
Odhinn, they said, swore an oath on his ring:
Who from now on will trust him?
By fraud at the feast he befuddled Suttung
And brought grief to Gunnlod.
It is time to sing in the seat of the wise,

From an evil man, if you make him your friend,

Though what she alleged was a lie.
If you know a friend you can fully trust,

Bandy no speech with a bad man:

Pierced by a spear, pledged to Odhinn,

Odin's Quest after the Runes

I know I hung on that windy Tree
nine whole days and nights,
stabbed with a spear, offered to Odin,
myself to mine own self given,
high on that Tree of which none hath heard
from what roots it rises to heaven.
None refreshed me ever with food or drink,
I peered right down in the deep;
crying aloud I lifted the Runes
then back I fell from thence.
Nine mighty songs I learned from the great
son of Bale-thorn, Bestla's sire;
I drank a measure of the wondrous Mead,
with the Soulstirrer's drops I was showered.
Ere long I bare fruit, and throve full well,
I grew and waxed in wisdom;
word following word, I found me words,
deed following deed, I wrought deeds.
Hidden Runes shalt thou seek and interpreted signs,
many symbols of might and power,
by the great Singer painted, by the high Powers fashioned,
graved by the Utterer of gods.
For gods graved Odin, for elves graved Daïn,
Dvalin the Dallier for dwarfs,
All-wise for Jötuns, and I, of myself,
graved some for the sons of men.
Dost know how to write, dost know how to read,

Runes and Poetry

There are many references throughout literature to runes and their magical, protective and historical influence. For the mythical origins of the runes see The Runes and Odin. A few passages from literary and historical works are reproduced here. Due to the sheer length of The Kalevala (The Epic Poem of Finland), it has not been reproduced on this page.

15th chapter of Gylfaginning

Many places under the heavens are beautiful, protected by the gods.
There under the ash tree by the spring is a splendid hall, and from this hall come forth three maidens
- Urdur, Verdandi, and Skuld - who shape the lives of men.
We call them Norns. There are also other Norns that shape each person's life,
some of the lineage of the gods, others descended from the elves,
but these three are related to the dwarfs….
Then spoke the Wanderer: If the Norns decide the fate of men and women,
then they have accorded them fate in extremely unequal portions,
as some have a good and rich life and some are granted or promised little;
some have a long life, some short.
The High One replied: Good Norns, those who are of good lineage, decree good lives.
But those to whom horrors befall - they were caused by evil Norns.

The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem

Wealth is a comfort to all men;
yet must every man bestow it freely,
if he wish to gain honour in the sight of the Lord.
The aurochs is proud and has great horns;
it is a very savage beast and fights with its horns;
a great ranger of the moors, it is a creature of mettle.
The thorn is exceedingly sharp,
an evil thing for any knight to touch,
uncommonly severe on all who sit among them.
The mouth is the source of all language,
a pillar of wisdom and a comfort to wise men,
a blessing and a joy to every knight.
Riding seems easy to every warrior while he is indoors
and very courageous to him who traverses the high-roads
on the back of a stout horse.
The torch is known to every living man by its pale, bright flame;
it always burns where princes sit within.
Generosity brings credit and honour, which support one's dignity;
it furnishes help and subsistence
to all broken men who are devoid of aught else.
Bliss he enjoys who knows not suffering, sorrow nor anxiety,
and has prosperity and happiness and a good enough house.
Hail is the whitest of grain;

With its sturdy trunk it offers a stubborn resistance,

it looks well on a horse and is a reliable equipment for a journey.
Iar is a river fish and yet it always feeds on land;
it has a fair abode encompassed by water, where it lives in happiness.
The grave is horrible to every knight,
